A pin, a place, a little perspective.
Five moments in history. Up to 200 points each. No timer, no rush.
Your daily expedition
- Read the historical clue.
- Drag the satellite globe to explore and scroll or pinch to zoom.
- Click or tap once where you think it happened. Your guess submits immediately; each question has one scored attempt.
- Discover the actual place, see your distance, and read the story and sources.
- Finish all five moments for your score out of 1,000, then share your five score emojis.
Every moment matters equally.
Each question is worth 200 points. For a city clue, anywhere in the accepted city area—including nearby suburbs—earns a gold star and full points. You don’t need to find the exact building or city center.
After your guess, a green outline shows the area that counts. If you miss, the distance is measured from your pin to the nearest edge of that area. The farther away you land, the fewer points you earn. For a specific landmark, distance is measured straight to its pin. A guess within 1 km earns full points, but we still show the actual distance. Wider places, such as a stretch of landing beaches, use an accepted area.
Smaller cities use their own area with a little room at the edges. Bigger cities include nearby suburbs, with limits to keep separate cities from counting. New guesses use the current outline; previously saved results keep their original scores. See the map sources and credits or download the adapted boundary data.
| Distance from the accepted area | Points |
|---|---|
| 0 km | 200 / 200 |
| 50 km | 196 / 200 |
| 100 km | 191 / 200 |
| 500 km | 161 / 200 |
| 1,000 km | 129 / 200 |
| 2,500 km | 67 / 200 |
| 5,000 km | 23 / 200 |
| 10,000 km | 3 / 200 |
| 20,000 km | 0 / 200 |
A new day, Eastern Time.
Everyone receives the same five daily questions. A new expedition opens at midnight in America/New_York, following Eastern Standard or Daylight Time as appropriate. A game already started keeps its original questions across the reset. Finishing after that puzzle’s Eastern midnight converts it to archive practice, so it cannot retroactively extend a streak or change the official daily standings.
A rhythm worth keeping.
Complete the official game on consecutive puzzle dates to build your streak. Yesterday’s streak stays alive while today’s game is waiting. Archive and regional practice games count toward your history but never fill a missing streak day.
Reading your colors
⭐ Spot on: 200 · 🟢 Green: 160–199 · 🟡 Yellow: 80–159 · 🔴 Red: 20–79 · ☠️ Way off: 0–19. A percentile appears only after ten official completions and means the percentage of completed scores at or below yours, including ties.
History needs a little care.
Our initial 150 questions use independently written clues with UNESCO heritage records and selected official site histories as factual sources. Coordinates represent the named site or locality. Modern borders and map labels help you navigate; they do not imply that today’s boundaries existed at the time. Questions rotate without repeating within the initial 30-day bank.
Keyboard users can open the coordinate button beneath the map. Your progress is saved after every submitted answer; a lost connection can be retried without scoring twice.
